The class is progressing very well. Unfortunately I forgot my camera for the 1st 2 classes and missed documenting the fabric exercises. Only one of the students did not have prior drawing instruction. I think they did really well. The more experienced students are a pleasure to have in any class – pushing the bar higher for everyone. The students were quite confident at this point. In the classes I emphasize trying out new mediums. So some students are using charcoal, pencil or conte and some are using markers. I have introduced blending, washes and painting negative spaces.
When the model arrived I noticed a marked drop in their drawings. I think that none of these students have ever had a model before. As I recall – it can be intimidating. They are adjusting quite well and those who are very detailed oriented are loosening up.
The last class will offer longer poses. Most of the students do not understand the gesture drawing – so that will continue as a warm-up but the 5 minute and 10 minute drawings will be replaced with 20 min and one 1 1/2 hr pose.
The following sketches range from 5 min to an hour. All student works.
I drew with the students to show them how to do a gesture and how to execute a chiaroscuro of high contrast drawing. I also wandered around the class and challenged each student on why they were doing or not doing something – like too fat or too small. As I was teaching the class I had about 1/2 the time to draw – showing the students that they can draw faster – I image this will improve with skill.
~ here are some of my efforts – a 20 min & a 5 min sketch.
